Roasted Makhana snack for kids

Makhana is known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, often used in quite a few Indian dishes – sweets and curries, also as an evening snack. The roasted makhanas are crunchy, light, and simple . It is nutritious, easy to prepare and yet wholesome and healthy.

This recipe is pretty straight forward and simple, and oil free. Makhana can be spiced using chaat masala, peppers and herbs.

Being a first time mom, once my little on started off with solids, I wondered what can be given for snack that is easy and nutritious , and is NOT available in a packet. I always prefer freshly cooked snack or meal for the baby. My husband and I travel quite often, and I wanted a snack, prepared at home that is easy to carry, and lasted a few days. Freshly prepared food is not always an option while travelling, except fruits, Makhana perfectly fit our needs. On our long haul flight to US, makhana turned out to be resourceful for our year old son, and it was easy on his tummy, despite the fact that he munched on it through out the journey.

I introduced makhana when my son was around 10 months (after his teeth emerged). Always exercise precaution while introducing new food to the babies, check with paediatrician and follow the 3 day rule.

Ingredients:

  • 100g of Makhana approximately
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/4 tsp or less salt
  • pinch of turmeric

Preparation:

  1. In a large pan, add Makhana, roast in low flame for 10-15 mins or until crunchy and crispy. Stir in between.
  2. Add lime juice, and continue roasting for another few minutes.
  3. Lastly, add salt and turmeric. Toss well.
  4. Switch off the flame, so the spices don’t burn.
  5. Let it cool down, and transfer makhana to an air tight container.
